How to pick a roofer in Arizona
Start with the license. Then ask six questions. Then read the contract.

To pick a roofer in Arizona, first verify the license on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website using the six-digit ROC number or company name. Confirm it is current and check complaints. Licensed residential contractors take part in the Recovery Fund. Then ask for a written estimate, warranty, proof of insurance, and a local address. 10X is AZ ROC #355299.
TL;DR
Arizona licenses roofers through the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). A license lookup takes a minute and shows status and complaints. Unlicensed work loses you the state's protections.
- Look up any roofer at the ROC Contractor Search by license number or name
- Check: license current, classification fits roofing, complaint history
- Licensed residential contractors participate in the Residential Contractors' Recovery Fund
- Get the estimate, scope, schedule, and warranty in writing
- Red flags: no ROC number, out-of-state plates after a storm, pressure to sign today, deductible offers

Step 1: Check the ROC license
Arizona's Registrar of Contractors licenses and regulates contractors. Go to the ROC Contractor Search, enter the six-digit license number or the company name, and read the record.
Look for three things: the license is current, the classification covers roofing, and the complaint history. You can call the ROC at 877-692-9762 to verify anything.
Why the license matters: the Recovery Fund
The ROC runs the Residential Contractors' Recovery Fund. The ROC describes it as financial protection provided by licensed Arizona residential contractors to homeowners. A residential contractor must either pay into the Fund or post a second bond.
If you hire an unlicensed roofer, that protection is not there. The ROC also takes workmanship complaints against licensed contractors.
Step 2: Ask six questions
- What is your ROC license number? (Then look it up.)
- Do you inspect on the roof, and will I get photos?
- Is the estimate written, line by line, and when will I have it?
- What warranty do you give on workmanship, in writing?
- Do you carry liability and workers' compensation insurance? Can I see the certificate?
- Where is your office? How long have you worked in Phoenix?
Step 3: Read the contract
- Scope: exactly what is being repaired or replaced
- Materials: underlayment, tile, shingle, or coating named
- Schedule: start and finish
- Payment terms
- Warranty: how long, what it covers, in writing
- Cleanup and debris removal
Red flags
- No ROC number, or a number that does not match the company name
- Door-knocking after a storm with out-of-state plates
- Pressure to sign the same day
- Offers to cover or waive your insurance deductible
- Estimate from the driveway or a drone only
- Large deposit demanded before any inspection
- No physical local address
